Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colors are used to generate secondary colors.

The term "Pointillism" was first used with respect to the work of Georges Seurat, and he is the artist most closely associated with the movement. The relatively few artists who worked in this style also included Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross.

Instead of mixing colour pigments on a palette and then applying the mixture onto the painting, the Pointillist applies small dots of pure unmixed colour directly onto the picture and relies on the eye of the viewer to mix the colours optically. Viewed at the right distance, (supposedly three times the diagonal measurement) the dots of colour give a richer and more subtle effect than can be achieved by conventional techniques.In the below painting by Paul Signac, Femmes au Puits, 1892, showing a detail with constituent colors.

• ·      A radical use of unnatural colours that separated colour from its usual representational and realistic role, giving new, emotional meaning to the colours.
• ·      One of Fauvism's major contributions to modern art was its radical goal of separating colour from its descriptive, representational purpose and allowing it to exist on the canvas as an independent element. Colour could project a mood and establish a structure within the work of art without having to be true to the natural world.
